659873bebb | The Massbus byte count register was incorrectly presumed to be constant during a complete I/O transfer request (it can change due to DMA activity). Prior to the conversion to use the sim_disk library, the Massbus byte count was only read once. After the code restructuring it was read early in the processing and again later in transfer processing. The subsequent read returned a different value which ultimately caused the problems. This fixes issue #30. | ||

Fixed a few minor issues:
1) a RELEASE is documented (in our limited case) to be equivalent to a CLEAR not a NOP. 2) avoid setting Attention as a consequence of processing an UNLOAD command. 3) extended debugging information needed while looking for an issue which turned out to be a bug in the vax 780 Massbus interrupt triggering logic. |

Added Asynch I/O and Disk Support for various Disk formats
I’ve always wanted to have the option to have simulated devices behave more naturally with respect to I/O operations. By more naturally I mean that the current simulator model I/O is either polled (for asynchronous things link Muxes and Network), or it is performed in the middle of some instruction execution taking possibly many milliseconds (disk and/or tapes). The existing model creates quite deterministic behavior which helps to debug and understand issues, but it trades off potential instruction execution while performing these I/O operations in between instruction execution. To address this concept (while still retaining the potential advantages of the original model), I’ve designed an Asynch I/O model extension for simh. In order to flesh-out and debug this design, I’ve also refactored several devices to utilize this capability. Please read the attached 0readmeAsynchIO.txt file for concept details about the approach. In order to make disk devices easy to implement (within or without the AsynchIO framework), I’ve created a sim_disk.c library which is modeled on the sim_tape.c library to generalize disk I/O like tape I/O is generalized in sim_tape.c. This sim_disk.c library now provides that natural place to implement support for various disk implementation formats (just like sim_tape support several formats, and one day will be the place to add direct physical tape access). The current sim_disk library provides the framework for direct support of 3 different disk formats: 1) standard simh disk format 2) platform specific physical disk access and 3) platform independent Virtual Disk format. The Virtual Disk format is an implementation of the format described in the ”Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) Image Format Specification”. The VHD specification is available for anyone to implement under the "Microsoft Open Specification Promise" described at http://www.microsoft.com/interop/osp/default.mspx. The VHD implementation includes support for: 1) Fixed sized disks 2) Dynamically expanding disks and 3) Differencing Disks. Dynamically expanding disks don’t change their “Virtual Size”, but they don’t consume disk space on the containing storage until the virtual sectors in the disk are actually written to (i.e. an RA81 or RA92 VHD with a VMS installed on it may initially only contain 30+ MB of files, and the resulting VHD will be 30+ MB). The VHD format contains meta data which describes the virtual device. Amongst this meta data is the simh device type which the VHD was originally created as. This metadata is therefore available whenever that VHD is attached to an emulated disk device in the future so the device type & size can be automatically be configured. Sim_disk_attach is used by device emulations to attach a simh/vhd/raw device to a simulated device. In command files, %n represents substitutable argument n. - The initial command line is now interpreted as the command name and substitutable arguments for a DO command. This is backward compatible to prior versions. - The initial command line parses switches. -Q is interpreted as quiet mode; informational messages are suppressed. - The HELP command now takes an optional argument. HELP <cmd> types help on the specified command. - Hooks have been added for implementing GUI-based consoles, as well as simulator-specific command extensions. A few internal data structures and definitions have changed. - Two new routines (tmxr_open_master, tmxr_close_master) have been added to sim_tmxr.c. The calling sequence for sim_accept_conn has been changed in sim_sock.c. - The calling sequence for the VM boot routine has been modified to add an additional parameter. - SAVE now saves, and GET now restores, controller and unit flags. - Library sim_ether.c has been added for Ethernet support. 1.2 VAX - Non-volatile RAM (NVR) can behave either like a memory or like a disk-based peripheral. If unattached, it behaves like memory and is saved and restored by SAVE and RESTORE, respectively. If attached, its contents are loaded from disk by ATTACH and written back to disk at DETACH and EXIT. - SHOW <device> VECTOR displays the device's interrupt vector. The 12653A has been renamed LPS and is off by default. It also supports the diagnostic functions needed to run the DCPC and DMS diagnostics. - The 12557A/13210A disk defaults to the 13210A (7900/7901). - The 12559A magtape is off by default. - New CPU options (EAU/NOEAU) enable/disable the extended arithmetic instructions for the 2116. These instructions are standard on the 2100 and 21MX. - New CPU options (MPR/NOMPR) enable/disable memory protect for the 2100 and 21MX. - New CPU options (DMS/NODMS) enable/disable the dynamic mapping instructions for the 21MX. - The 12539 timebase generator autocalibrates. 1.10 Simulated Magtapes - Simulated magtapes recognize end of file and the marker 0xFFFFFFFF as end of medium. Only the TMSCP tape simulator can generate an end of medium marker. - The error handling in simulated magtapes was overhauled to be consistent through all simulators. 1.11 Simulated DECtapes - Added support for RT11 image file format (256 x 16b) to DECtapes. 2. Release Notes 2.1 Bugs Fixed - TS11/TSV05 was not simulating the XS0_MOT bit, causing failures under VMS. In addition, two of the CTL options were coded interchanged. - IBM 1401 tape was not setting a word mark under group mark for load mode reads. This caused the diagnostics to crash. - SCP bugs in ssh_break and set_logon were fixed (found by Dave Hittner). - Numerous bugs in the HP 2100 extended arithmetic, floating point, 21MX, DMS, and IOP instructions were fixed. Bugs were also fixed in the memory protect and DMS functions. The moving head disks (DP, DQ) were revised to simulate the hardware more accurately. Missing functions in DQ (address skip, read address) were added. 2.2 HP 2100 Debugging - The HP 2100 CPU nows runs all of the CPU diagnostics. - The peripherals run most of the peripheral diagnostics. There is still a problem in overlapped seek operation on the disks. See the file hp2100_diag.txt for details. 3. 1. New Features 1.1 GRI-909 - This is a new simulator for the GRI-909. - It has been hand-tested; so far, no software has been discovered. 1.2 VAX - SET CPU CONHALT will cause a HALT instruction to return to the boot ROM console rather than to SIMH. SET CPU SIMHALT restores the default behavior. - BRB/W self at IPL 1F stops the simulator. This is the default behavior of VMS at exit. 1.3 PDP-18b - ATTACH -A PTR/PTP attaches the reader and punch in ASCII mode. In ASCII mode, the reader automatically sets the high order bit of incoming alphabetic data, and the punch clears the high order bit of outgoing data. 1.4 SCP - DO -V echoes commands from the file as they are executed. - Under Windows, execution priority is set BELOW_NORMAL when the simulator is running. 2. 1. New Features 1.1 Directory and documentation - Only common files (SCP and libraries) are in the top level directory. Individual simulator files are in their individual directories. - simh_doc.txt has been split up. simh_doc.txt now documents only SCP. The individual simulators are documented in separate text files in their own directories. - mingw_build.bat is a batch file for the MINGW/gcc environment that will build all the simulators, assuming the root directory structure is at c:\sim. - Makefile is a UNIX make file for the gcc environment that will build all the simulators, assuming the root directory is at c:\sim. 1.2 SCP - DO <file name> executes the SCP commands in the specified file. - Replicated registers in unit structures can now be declared as arrays for examine, modify, save, and restore. Look for a complete 16b/32b Interdata simulator sometime next year. 2. Release Notes 2.1 SCP SCP now allows replicated registers in unit structures to be modelled as arrays. All replicated register declarations have been replaced by register array declarations. As a result, save files from prior revisions will generate errors after restoring main memory. 2.2 PDP-11 The Unibus map code is in debug. The map was implemented primarily to allow source sharing with the VAX, which requires a DMA map. DMA devices work correctly with the Unibus map disabled. The RQDX3 simulator has run a complete RSTS/E SYSGEN, with multiple drives, and booted the completed system from scratch. 2.3 VAX The VAX simulator will run the boot code up to the >>> prompt. It can successfully process a SHOW DEVICE command. It runs the HCORE instruction diagnostic. It can boot the hobbyist CD through SYSBOOT and through the date/time dialog and restore the hobbyist CD, using standalone backup. On the boot of the restored disk, it gets to the date/time dialog, and then crashes. 2.4 SDS 940 The SDS 940 is untested, awaiting real code. 2.5 GCC Optimization At -O2 and above, GCC does not correctly compile the simulators which use setjmp-longjmp (PDP-11, PDP-10, VAX). A working hypothesis is that optimized state maintained in registers is being used in the setjmp processing routine. On the PDP-11 and PDP-10, all of this state has been either made global, or volatile, to encourage GCC to keep the state up to date in memory. The VAX is still vulnerable. 3.
